In addition to the vacationing friends and family that usually visit Sanibel Moorings during January and February, this year we had a new guest – a Screech Owl!

The resourceful male found the perfect cavity in a Cabbage Palm near the east parking lot where he set about trying to woo a female to the site.  Unfortunately, no females were interested in the new site as the cavity has now been vacated.

A nesting box was purchased and donated by owners Suzanne and David Arch.  We will be mounting the box in a location we hope will attract Screech Owls for many generations to come!

In addition to the guests weekly Tuesday Garden Tours at Sanibel Moorings provided by master gardener and nature advocate Anita Marshall, Anita also offers a weekly guided Wednesday Garden Tour for the public that has been a tremendous success since it was started in January.

Anita’s goal with the Tours and Workshops is to not only to inform the public about the various plantings and foliage found in our area, but to promote Sanibel Moorings. Anita has been amazed at the number of people that have heard of Sanibel Moorings, but had no idea of all the unique plantings that we have and amenities we offer.

The weekly Tropical Garden Tour is a walking tour of the property that include the names, origins and history of some of our unique plantings as well as including samples from some of the fruit grown on site.

The first Butterfly Gardening Workshop was held on February 26 and was complete with handouts and a slideshow presentation. Participants were given a tour of the property and shown some of the caterpillars and chrysalis.

There is no charge for the Tours & Workshops to Sanibel Moorings guests and minimal charge for the public ($5 for Tours, $10 for Workshops per person) with all money going toward the purchase of plants and supplies.
